#Emergency Water Main Repairs Cause Temporary Service Disruptions in Local Area
Residents may experience temporary water service disruptions over the next week as crews work to repair damage to municipal water mains. Recent severe weather and aging infrastructure have caused cracks and leaks in main lines that feed homes and businesses in parts of town.
##What Areas are Affected?
The following neighborhoods and streets will be affected by the repairs:
- Oakdale between Elm Street and Park Avenue
- Cherry Hills subdivision
- downtown Main Street between 1st and 5th
- Magnolia Lane south of Washington Blvd
Not all homes and business in these areas will experience shut-offs, but some may have lower water pressure or cloudy water during construction.
##When Will Water Be Turned Off?
Crews plan to work between the hours of 9am and 4pm daily, with water shut-offs not lasting more than 3 hours at a time. To minimize impact, most shut-offs will be scheduled midday during times of lower water usage.
##What If I Still Need Water?
If you require a constant water supply for medical devices, pets, or other essential purposes, please contact the municipal public works department at to inquire about an emergency supply. For businesses impacted by the repairs, speak with your manager about contingency plans.
##Why Are Emergency Repairs Needed?
The recent freeze/thaw cycle led to an increase in ruptures and leaks in aging municipal water mains. On Oakdale Lane, the main line split open due to ground shift, and must be replaced. Other repairs are needed on century-old lines underneath Main Street. Replacing these main lines now will prevent major ruptures down the road.
##What Work Is Being Done?
Crews will first shut off water in the impacted section and drain remaining water from the pipes. Next, digging will commence to access the damaged pipes. Once exposed, leaking sections will be detached and replaced with new PVC piping. The lines will then be reconnected to the municipal system, pressure tested, and chlorinated before service can resume. Repaved roadways may have temporary patches until permanent repairs can be scheduled when weather permits.
##Will This Impact My Water Quality?
You may notice cloudy or discolored water for 1-2 days after work is completed as sediment and air is flushed from the system. Run cold water taps closest to your main line connection for 5-10 minutes after service returns to help clear this out faster. Water used for consumption should be boiled as a precaution during this time.
##Stay Informed!
For updates on repair progress, areas impacted, and when you can expect water service to be restored, be sure to check this website, town social media pages, local news, and look for flyers distributed to affected neighborhoods. Having drinking water and contingency plans in place will help reduce inconvenience.
